Germanic leader Odoacer captured Ravenna and deposed the young Emperor Romulus Augustus, traditionally marking the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The sixteen-year-old emperor, ironically bearing the names of Rome's founder and first emperor, was sent into comfortable exile. The event closed a chapter that had begun nearly a millennium earlier.
