A legendary king celebrates victory over Etruria
Servius Tullius, the legendary sixth king of Rome, celebrated the first of his three triumphs for his victory over the Etruscans. Though much of his story blends history with myth, his reign was credited with establishing the Roman census, reforming the army, and expanding the city's boundaries. His triumph marked Rome's growing power over its Etruscan neighbors.

The commandant of industrialized death
In Baden-Baden, Germany, Rudolf Hoss was born into a devoutly Catholic family. He would become the commandant of Auschwitz, overseeing the murder of over one million people in the most horrific death camp of the Holocaust. Captured after the war while hiding under a false name, he was tried, convicted, and executed at Auschwitz itself, returning to the scene of his crimes.
